15 Best States For Petroleum Engineers

If you are a petroleum engineer, you should definitely take a look at 15 best states for petroleum engineers.

We all know that your job is not easy at all, but fortunately for all people in this business, it usually pays off well. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics dated from 2016, petroleum engineers earn on average $128,230 per a year, which is about $38,000 more than if you would work as an average engineer. The highest salary recorded by the 10% of petroleum engineer’s account was around $208,000, while the lowest paid 10% of petroleum engineers earned a bit less than $73,000. One more information that was crucial for this subject is the number of employees in this area. According to the research, there are about 35,000 petroleum engineers working in the US only.

To find the top 15 states for petroleum engineers, Insider Monkey consulted several sources and took the US Bureau of Labor and the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center. From there, they collected the average annual salary for petroleum engineers and the average cost of living in each state. Since there wasn’t enough information for the current employment in each state, that information wasn’t taken into concern when the overall IM score was counted.

The list contains both states that offer higher than the average salary and lower than that, but Insider Monkey’s team made sure that each of them has the average salary above $100,000. Among the top 5 states are Louisiana, with the overall IM score of 131 and the average annual salary of $128,370, Michigan, with the IM score of 32 and the average annual salary of $112,240. In the top 3 there are Oklahoma, that has the same IM score as Michigan, but a bit higher average annual salary for petroleum engineers of $115,060, Alabama, that jumped to the IM score 35 and offers the salary of $123,330 and the top one state for petroleum engineers turns out to be Texas. With the overall IM score of 41, Texas took the first place on the list. Petroleum engineers in this state can earn around $139,800 on the annual basis and they can even save up some money because the cost of living index is also very low, 90.7 according to the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center. Besides, there are already 17,760 actively working as petroleum engineers and it is estimated that, by the end of 2024, this number would be increased to 18,530, which means that there would be around 560 new job openings every year.
