10 Best Places to Retire in Ecuador

If you are planning to settle down somewhere outside the USA, you must be glad to read the best places to retire in Ecuador. Insider Monkey recently published an article about this topic giving us some very useful tips. Moving to South America is a great idea because there are lots of pros.  If you feel home sick, it’s just a few hours flying and you can stand on your homeland’s ground.

On the other hand you can enjoy everything you need: coast, mountains, lakes, rich culture. Ecuador has shown improvement in the last decade. Ecuador spends 9.2% of GDP on health, while the life expectancy is 76.5 years on average. There were 1.67 physicians and 1.6 hospital beds per 1,000 people in 2011. Until a few years back, the foreign residents of Ecuador had to turn to private insurance, but thanks to legislation changes from 2014, expats can now join the public healthcare system for a monthly fee. The medical costs are considered to be very cheap and the quality of healthcare is satisfying. So what are the best places there?

Now without a further ado let’s see what Insider Monkey has investigated for us. We have picked three places from their list.

The first place is Quito. IM Score is 13, rent cost is  $355, meal cost is $3.5, hospital to population ratio is 46,055. Temperature is 60/64°F, the rainy days are 25/31, sunny days:  –.  If you love big cities where there is always something happening, then Ecuador’s capital is a good place to consider. Alongside Poland’s Krakow, Quito was the UNESCO’s first World Cultural Heritage Site thanks to one of the best-preserved historic city centers. The second place is Salinas. IM Score is 19, rent cost is  $350, meal cost is $3.25, hospital to population ratio is 14,243. Temperature is 78/87°F, the rainy days are 0/27, sunny days are 1/28. If you are all about the beaches and sea, then there is no doubt that Salinas should be at the very top of your priorities. Once a small village, Salinas has grown into being the largest resort and tourist destination on the coast of Ecuador. Cuenca is the third one on our list now. IM Score is 21, rent cost is  $290, meal cost is $3.25, hospital to population ratio is 16,000. Temperature is 43/49°F, the rainy days are 28/31, sunny days are 0/4. Cuenca is considered to be the city with a European feel, thanks to its architecture and colonial remaining. The climate is considered to be mild, with warm days and cooler nights. You won’t be near the beach, but there are lots of other natural attractions to experience.
