10 Countries with the Highest Rate of Child Marriage in 2018

This article will bring you to the list of countries with the highest rate of child marriage in 2018. Insider Monkey has come up with a great and arresting compilation again that is really worth reading it. In some countries which had high rates of child marriage for years, that number dropped sharply in the last decade, as evidenced by child marriage statistics  in India where the percentage of girls who get married before they turn 18 declined for 18%. Moreover, the biggest improvements are recorded precisely in South Asia during the same period, although one of the countries from that region ended up on our list after all. However, child marriage is an issue in developed countries as well, since child marriage is still permitted in America. Considering there isn’t a law that entirely forbids this practice, and children can marry with their parent’s consent and judge’s approval, between 2000 and 2015, around 207,000 minors in the U.S. were married.

Now without a further ado let’s see what Insider Monkey has investigated for us. We have picked three countries with the highest rate of child marriage in 2018 from their list.

The first one is South Sudan. As is the case in general, low rates of education and literacy in women, poverty, and political instability of the country and gender inequality are main reasons for child marriage which bring South Sudan among the top countries with the highest rates of child marriage in 2018. The second country on our short list should be Bangladesh. Being among the top countries with the highest rates of child marriage in 2018, Bangladesh does not seem to make this situation better, even though having laws that prohibit marriage under 18, it is allowed in “special cases”, but it seems that each case is special there. And at last, but not least we are mentioning Chad. Even though Chad is among the top countries with the highest rates of child marriage, some efforts for lowering these figures were undertaken. One of them is raising the legal age for marriage from 15 to 18 in 2015.
