For some reason, even though we are living in the 21st century, gay people are not that well accepted. I don’t really get why, especially because being gay was a completely normal thing a few centuries ago. Many famous writers and artists were gay and most of them are still appreciated. As it turns out, if you have some big accomplishment, it isn’t a problem if you are gay. But what if you are a doctor? Or a teacher?
Having feelings toward the same gender isn’t disease and doesn’t spread through a cough. If a person standing next to you in a line is gay, he can’t magically turn you gay just by being next to you. What will happen if your child one day sits in front of you and declares that he/ she is dating the same gender? Will you throw him/her out? To be fair, you wouldn’t be the first parent to do it. But the point of you, as a parent is to accept your child the way it is. No matter who he/ she loves, no matter what he/ she decides to be when he/ she grows up. But, as parents, we tend to create the perfect image of our children’s lives and we get disappointed as soon as he/ she doesn’t reach our own expectations or changes mind about his/ her life.
But let’s stop and think for a minute. We are grown ups . Did we follow our parents’ desires? If so, are we completely happy? If not, is it fair to us that they only see us as disappointments? Truth to be told, I am one big disappointment to my family. By now, I should have graduated from college and started working in a profession they have chosen and be ready to get married in a few years. Out of all of that, I am still in college, working in a field that I am interested in and have a baby. Even though they love my child like no one else in the world, I fell in their eyes.
Gay people have more serious problems in this matter. But they decided to be who they are and stop hiding. There are many organizations that are trying to help them out and give them safety.
